One of the most breath-taking cities in France, Avignon has long been a centre for trade, tourism, religion and administrative control.  Visitors to the city are treated to the awe-inspiring sight of the Palace of the Popes (Palais des Papes) as well as the beautiful Pont d'Avignon, the Notre Dame des Doms, and the Musee Requien (Natural History Museum).  Avignon is a great location to base oneself for exploring the surrounding Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region - within easy driving distance are sights such as Le Pont du Gard (Roman aqueduct), and the towns of Nimes, Arles, Orange and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  South-east on the A7 (and later the A9) lie the cities of Salon-de-Provence and Aix-en-Provence; whilst the A7 to the north takes travellers to Montélimar.

Avignon is serviced by the Avignon-Caumont Airport (Aéroport d'Avignon), a small international complex which is visited by FlyBe (from Exeter and Southampton) and Jet2.com (from Edinburgh and Leeds/Bradford).  The airport is located to the south-east of Avignon itself, directly of the N7 Route de Marseille which connects through a junction just south of the airport with the A7 L'Autoroute du Soleil.  Car rental is recommended for exploring the surrounding region, and there are several car hire companies based at the airport including Avis, Europcar, Budget, Hertz and National.  The collection points are marked in the car park outside the terminal itself.  As Avignon can experience hot weather in the summer (sometimes over 30°C) it is recommended that you rent a car equipped with air conditioning if you will be visiting the region in the warmer months.
